The Nuggets do, however, have some cap flexibility ($34 million) with the expiring contracts, but will have to toe the line carefully if they hope to bring back one of their most important assets.

If the Serbian center's option for 2018-2019 was exercised, then he would become an unrestricted free agent after the completion of the following season and the Nuggets could easily lose him to another team. Free agency begins on July 1 at midnight ET.

Of course, as with any young max deal, the clock is now ticking on the Nuggets to make their situation one that Jokic will want to stay in for a long time.

The Denver Nuggets will reportedly decline their team option on Nikola Jokic as the first step toward negotiating a larger extension, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports. Both the franchise and Jokic's representatives have worked through discussions on his future in recent weeks, league sources said. But Jokic did what he could down the stretch in 2017-18, as he averaged 24 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 6.4 apg, 1.4 spg and 1 bpg over the final 18 games of the season.

Jokic was one of the top big men in the National Basketball Association last season, averaging 18.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game, all of which were career highs. At 22 years old, Jokic has nothing but potential to get better in front of him.
