Brazil's best chance came about halfway through the first as Neymar streaked behind Costa Rica's defense only to meet Real Madrid's, Keylor Navas, who came out for the block.

Moments later, Neymar was booked for petulantly punching the ball in front of Kuipers as Costa Rica players sprawled out on the turf time wasting. But it needs at least a point against Brazil to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

At the final whistle, Neymar sat down on the grass and wept, with the emotion of victory hitting home after the tense Group E contest at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

After a goalless first half Brazil scored twice in injury time, reward for Tite's insistence his players concentrate and press right to the end.

It was a compelling battle.

In the 13th minute Los Ticos almost snatched a shock lead on the break as Cristian Gamboa sprinted forward down the right and pulled the ball back to a wide open Celso Borges in space.

This World Cup is Neymar's personal melodrama, and the audience were treated to a passionate performance from the Brazil forward, who salvaged an afternoon of frustration and ridicule with a goal that brought on a bout of tears.

Jesus's header crashed against the crossbar and after some excellent work by Paulinho, Coutinho's follow-up hit the ever-present Gamboa on the line.

Coutinho once again saved the Seleção, darting into the box and crushing a close range shot past Navas for the 1-0 lead.

With 20 minutes left, Gamboa made his first mistake and Neymar should have capitalised.

The Selecao began to move through the gears after the opening 25 minutes and had a goal disallowed when an expert touch-and-finish on the volley from Gabriel Jesus was in vain because of the offside flag. Kuipers pointed to the spot but after reviewing the video replay, reversed his decision.

Neymar was redeemed with virtually the last kick of the game as he cushioned a volley into an empty net after a selfless cross from Costa, securing a victory which puts Brazil in a strong position to make the last 16.

In the 57th minute Douglas Costa burst down the right and he pulled back a cross towards Neymar, whose first-time shot was tipped over the bar superbly by Navas. Costa Rica has been eliminated.
