Newey Reveals Ricciardo Set for Canadian Grand Prix Grid Penalties

Canadian Grand Prix Daniel Ricciardo to have grid penalty in Montreal Daniel Ricciardo was extraordinary in Monaco

Head of technical Department of the Red Bull Adrian Newey no doubt that in Canada, Daniel ricciardo can expect a fine in the form of loss of several starting positions, but it is unclear how serious it will be.

"He will definitely be taking some penalties in Montreal, we haven't heard at the moment just how many".

With just a third of the season elapsed, Ricciardo has already used a significant chunk of his allowance for engine parts for the entire campaign with the size of his penalties in Canada this weekend set to be determined by just how many components will require changing after he guided his handicapped RB14 auto to the chequered flag in Monaco.

Furthermore, Ricciardo has also used the maximal amount of energy stores (battery) and control electronics, and if any of those needs a change, Ricciardo will face a further five-place penalty. The race will take place on Sunday at 2.10 p.m. EDT with live TV coverage being provided by ABC.

Despite only six races, Ricciardo has already used a major chunk of the allowed engine parts. "The K is definitely a penalty though". "I would be somewhat surprised at that one".

Renault, Red Bull's engine supplier, will field an upgraded PU at Canada via its works team.

Renault are poised to introduce a new engine this weekend but Newey has cautioned expectations by predicting it may only gain a tenth of a second of lap time.

Daniel Ricciardo has put his Red Bull talks on hold until Lewis Hamilton signs a new deal at Mercedes, according to Helmut Marko. The Renault engine's unreliability has meant that Ricciardo's auto has already the maximum permitted number of energy stores and control electronics. The Australian's auto suffered severe power unit troubles in Monaco and his penalty in Canada will be dependent on the number of elements that need changing.

But Newey was unaware of the situation involving those.

The MGU-K on Ricciardo's auto stopped working completely during the Monaco race, which he won from pole position, and he raced without it for some 50 laps on the tight and twisty street circuit.

Ricciardo got back into title contention with the win on the streets of the Principality and was hoping to carry his momentum into the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
