A almost complete skeleton of a dinosaur, which has more than 150 million years, went under the hammer for more than 2,36 million dollars (2 million euros) in Paris.

From the remains, whatever it proves to be, the dinosaur dies at an old age, Mickeler, a valuation expert for the French auction house Aguttes said. Although some of its recent history remains unclear, at some point after being discovered the bones were legally exported to Europe and studied at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences of Brussels.

An unnamed French collector outbid others - including interested parties from Japan and Sweden - and "wants [the skeleton] to be on display in a French museum", auctioneer Claude Aguttes told the Agence France-Presse.

The auction house said that the anonymous new owner will be allowed to choose a name for the dinosaur - "as long as it's scientific, and subject to peer review".

Expert Eric Geneste told AFP that it was impossible to classify the skeleton as an allosaurus because of its long shoulder blades and different number of teeth. And is going to put his Museum at the Museum for everyone to see, giving scientists the opportunity to study it.

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, had argued in a statement this might run counter to naming rules. The unidentified bidder could now give a name to a new dinosaur species.

Essentially, if the collector did buy the skeleton in the hopes that they could name the species, it's unlikely the scientific community will acknowledge that name.

Still, Mickeler said that additional research will be required to confirm that the painstakingly reproduced skeleton is truly a fresh discovery. It rather wanted the fossils to be kept in a public repository.

The new owner, who has not been identified, bought the fossil for $2,360,389.

Scientists who have studied it said there were several differences with known species and that the dinosaur lived during the late Jurassic period.
