Here We Go Again: Data Broker Exactis Leaks 340 Million Records
29 June, 2018, 11:42
On Wednesday, a security researcher named Vinny Troia said he stumbled on a massive database containing the detailed records of 340 million people -all of which was mistakenly made available online. With 230 million single people found in the records (the other 110 million records refer to businesses), this is certainly a very large-scale incident, and it differs from some other data leaks such as T-Mobile's in that most of the people on the database probably aren't aware that they're on it. "I don't know where the data is coming from, but it's one of the most comprehensive collections I've ever seen", he said.
Another major data breach has left roughly 340 million records exposed by data aggregation firm Exactis after information was left on a publicly accessible server. Earlier this month, security researcher Vinny Troia found that almost 2 terabytes of data was exposed, which seems to include personal information on hundreds of millions of U.S. adults and millions of businesses, the report said. (That's according to the Google search description-Exactis' website is now unavailable, presumably because people are rushing to figure out exactly who leaked their information.) This kind of data is valuable to marketers, sure, but it's also useful to hackers who want to target specific people.
"The Exactis data leak should enrage consumers and businesses alike". The government's computer security weaknesses were laid bare with the WikiLeaks release.
