A mother is warning other parents of tick dangers after her daughter was left paralyzed.
After waking her daughter to get ready for daycare, Jessica Griffin noticed that Kailyn struggled to stand on her own and was slurring her speech, according to news reports.
Griffin said Kailyn was "perfectly fine" the night before, but things took a "scary" turn on June 6 when she woke her up for school.
"PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!" she posted. She removed the tick and rushed her daughter to hospital. Tick paralysis begins after a tick becomes attached to a person's head. Tick paralysis occurs mostly in the spring and early summer, and is reported more commonly in children, probably due to their smaller body mass. Symptoms tend to appear four to seven days after a tick bite and go away within 24 hours of removing the tick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As she helped Kailyn with her hair, Griffin found a sight that greatly alarmed her.
A 5-year-old girl in MS was paralyzed for over a day from a tick bite, an unusual case highlighting the importance of protecting against insects as peak biting season begins. "It's more common in children than it is adults", she wrote last Wednesday.
Here is more about how and why ticks can cause paralysis and worse. Ticks are most active from April through September, The Washington Post has reported. It can start as fatigue, numbness and an increasing inability to move.
The American Lyme Disease Foundation states that it takes five to seven days for a person to develop tick paralysis symptoms. Through their research that ran between January and December 2017, they found that Chicago, Boise, Dayton, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Rapid City, South Dakota, and St. Louis had the most ticks in their cities.

A nurse bathing her after she was admitted to the hospital found a tick along her hairline.
She posted images to Facebook last week, showing Kailyn in her hospital bed with a splint and an IV connected to her arm. "Kailyn woke up and couldn't walk!"
"Look who is walking out of the hospital!" Symptoms usually improve with 24 hours, according to the CDC, after the tick has been completely removed.
