Mardy Fish: Dominic Thiem will win at least three French Open titles

Nadal Federer fight'the watch' keep winning Slams Nadal insists passing Federer's 20 Slams not on agenda

Whether it was at the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo, Madrid, or Rome-whether it was his home tournament in Barcelona-Nadal nearly never lost on the Spaniard.

After winning 26 of his 27 matches throughout the European claycourt season and 81 of his last 86 sets on clay, there is nothing to suggest Nadal's domination in Paris will end soon. Now, a decade later, the Spaniard is still the undisputed King of Clay.

Nadal's Barcelona Open semifinal win over David Goffin was his 400th tour-level clay-court match win, making him the fourth man in the Open Era to win 400 matches on clay, after Vilas (659), Manuel Orantes (502) and Muster (422).

Why? Nadal was 95-0 when capturing the opener on clay in the best of five format.

They would have switched places if the Spaniard had failed to win his record-extending 11th championship on Sunday (Monday NZT). The Austrian had trouble with the Nadal serve, and he gave up an easy hold.

Thiem, mixing heavy top-spin and flat groundstrokes and angling balls across the sidelines, saved a break point at 1-2 and two more at 2-3 and there were signs that Nadal was struggling with his timing as he framed several forehands. After serving a fault, Nadal took the unusual step of heading to the sideline in the middle of a game. Thiem is the only player who has managed to beat Nadal on clay since 2016. For a time, fans could nearly believe that Thiem would present a challenge in this match.

He also let four match points go at 5-2 but he would not be denied as Thiem went long with a backhand on the fifth. Could Thiem provide us with a classic final?

Unfortunately, about half an hour later, the answer became a clear and resounding no.

In a 10-minute second game of the second set, Thiem suffered more trauma. "I don't know how it's going to be but for the moment I'll be off for a few days and I'll try to get ready, recover and go to play on grass".

Nadal retained the momentum in the second set, breaking his opponent in the second game and holding out to edge closer to yet another title at Roland Garros. One down-the-line forehand victor landed right at the baseline, leaving Thiem sagging his shoulders and muttering.

Nadal earned another break early in the third set and looked to be home free to his 11th title from there.

Federer, meanwhile, would go on to win his 20th Grand Slam at the event and is undoubtedly the betting favorite to win this year.

Nadal now has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name, leaving him just three short of Roger Federer's all-time record in the men's game.

Of the past 53, Nadal has won 17, Federer 16, Djokovic 12, and Murray and Wawrinka three apiece.

That's three behind Federer who is more than four years older. As we head into Wimbledon, Federer and Nadal are the tournament's two favorites. It was his best performance of the fortnight, as Nadal confirmed on court, just when he needed it most.
