USA, Canada and Mexico to host football World Cup 2026
13 June, 2018, 23:17
A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated football tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable USA defeat to Qatar in voting for the 2022 event eight years ago. Mexico has played in every World Cup since 1990. Add World Cup as an interest to stay up to date on the latest World Cup news, video, and analysis from ABC News.
The so-called united bid convincingly beat another put forward by Morocco, receiving 135 of 206 votes against 65 for the North African country.
It will be decided at FIFA Congress in June 2019 whether the three host nations all receive automatic qualification for the tournament.
A total of 200 voters from Fifa's member associations had to decide between Morocco or North America as host of the 2026 World Cup.
As it stands now, 60 games will be played in the United States, with Mexico and Canada hosting 10 each.
Bid leaders say 5.8m tickets sold could generate more than $2bn, while hospitality takings could be 150 per cent higher than the baseline figure anticipated for Russian Federation this summer.
President Trump tweeted his congratulations to those involved in winning the right to host the competition. Mexico last missed the tournament in 1990, while Canada hasn't qualified for the World Cup since making their lone appearance in 1986.
The money promised by the North American bid will be a strong boost to Federation Internationale de Football Association. It's not clear how that would work with three countries as co-hosts.
Shanks is gearing up for this year's tournament in Moscow, which will be broadcast in the U.S.by Fox Sports, and will take place in 11 cities across Russian Federation.
The bidding process had, nonetheless, attracted some political controversy around Trump.
Soccer is Mexico's national sport, but is still considered a niche sport in the United States and Canada. Canada has never hosted the World Cup. "It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid". "We are all united in football".
With only three teams in each group and each team guaranteed only two games, there is a greater opportunity for teams to collude with each other in the final group-stage matches to secure passage to the knockout round. But it emerged last week that Trump himself had lobbied FIFA's leadership to assuage those concerns. The only other time multiple countries shared the World Cup was 2002, when Japan and South Korea were given passes into the competition. The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025.
The document promised " complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula " without detailing exactly what that would entail. And after Trump made a fat joke and showed Kim the inside of his limo, they signed their "historish agreement", he said.
Trump and Kim were returning to their respective strongholds following the talks - but to far different receptions. "Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he tweeted .
