Kitchen Towels Are Source of Possibly Pathogenic Bacteria

A study has revealed what may be lurking in your tea towel A study has revealed what may be lurking in your tea towel. Home & Decorating The ugly side to your household tea towel

Several factors - including diet, family size and usage - influence the growth of pathogens on kitchen towels, the scientists said in a statement. Repeated use of tea towels in the kitchen could be putting families at risk of food poisoning, according to new research.

The researchers found that 49% of the kitchen towels had bacterial growth, which increased significantly by size of family, extended family, and presence of children. This bacterium, as well as coliforms, were also more likely to reside on towels used by families with non-vegetarian diets. Out of the 49 samples that were positive for bacterial growth, 36.7 percent grew coliforms, 36.7 percent grew Enterococcus spp and 14.3 percent grewS. aureus.

For the study, the researchers examined a total of 100 kitchen towels that had been used for one month.

Although the new finding may sound gross, it doesn't mean you should ditch your kitchen towel; experts said the bacteria found on the towels in this study aren't particularly concerning when it comes to foodborne illnesses.

"Humid towels and multipurpose usage of kitchen towels should be discouraged".

Avoid using tea towels as a "hand towel" after washing your hands or to dry benchtops - keep a separate towel in the kitchen for that objective.

"Cross-contamination is happening in the kitchen, and those bacteria could reach our food and cause food poisoning", said lead researcher Susheela Biranjia-Hurdoyal. Bacteria also marked their presence on towels with traces of meat on it.

S aureus was isolated at a higher rate from families of lower socio-economic status and those with children.

"They should be machine washed in hot water with soap and bleach if white, or if colored use a peroxide-containing soap made for sanitizing colored clothes", said Philip Tierno Jr., PhD, clinical professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine. Diet was also an important factor; families on non-vegetarian diets had higher prevalence of coliform and S. aureus detection. "The presence of Escherichia coli indicates possible fecal contamination and lack of hygiene practices (while handling non-vegetarian food)".

He said, "The key advice is to remain attentive to food safety when preparing food in the home, which includes proper hand-washing, avoiding cross-contamination, and cooking and storing foods at the right temperatures".

But Ms Moir warned that while paper towel could minimise the food poisoning risk, they are less environmentally friendly. "Bigger families with children and elderly members should be especially vigilant to hygiene in the kitchen", suggests Biranjia-Hurdoyal.
