Kim summit helped world avoid nuclear catastrophe

President Trump downplayed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's regime's history of human rights abuse and killing in an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier that aired Wednesday night, and suggested he sensed a "chemistry" between himself and the dictator.

Earlier today, North Korean state media reported that Trump made concessions to Kim that were not in the statement signed by the leaders - including Trump agreeing to "the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action" rather than the USA administration's prior demands for rapid denuclearization.

"A long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

"Make no mistake, we are going to maintain the readiness of our forces in South Korea", said one USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Vice President Pence on Tuesday afternoon told House and Senate Republican lawmakers that semiannual war games would cease - as long as North Korea follows through on efforts to denuclearize.

They fear it could erode the readiness of US troops in one of the world's most sensitive military flashpoints who have long prided themselves on being able to "fight tonight", thanks to heightened training.

His comments come a day after an unprecedented meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to slam the media for its insistence that the United States gave up too much in its deal with Kim.

But while Trump also voiced a desire to eventually bring back USA troops, he told Baier that the U.S.

"We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith - which both sides are!" he wrote online.

Speaking in South Korea, where he discussed the outcome of the summit, Secretary Pompeo said there was still "a great deal of work to do" with North Korea.

The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the U.S. would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea. Fears of conflict were particularly acute after Trump called Kim "Rocket Man" and Kim pledged to "tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".

"We had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document", Kim said through a translator. "I am confident that they understand what we're prepared to do, the handful of things that we're likely not prepared to do". "This isn't another administration that never got it started and, therefore, never got it done".

Provocative nuclear and missile tests by North Korea past year initially gave Moon little diplomatic room to maneuver. But Bush, too, ultimately pursued negotiations. "For example you could probably have them give up their nuclear weapons, or you could find and verify and maybe disable key sites. but it's not possible to dismantle or disable all their nuclear infrastructure or to redirect scientists who work on nuclear weapons to civilian jobs". He said of Clinton: "He spent United States dollars 3 billion and got nothing".

Trump also is wrong in saying "nothing happened" in return. North Korea stopped producing plutonium for eight years under the 1994 agreement. Just how much was achieved, though, is in question, because of the suspicions that emerged later that North Korea had been secretly seeking to enrich uranium.
