Vehicles covered by the recall include 2010 through 2013 Forte compact cars and 2011 through 2013 Optima midsize cars.

Combined with a previous recall expansion by Hyundai, the affiliated automakers are recalling almost 1.1 million vehicles due to the problem, which has been linked to four deaths. Those include the 2011 through 2013 Sonata midsize vehicle and the 2011 and 2012 Sonata Hybrid.

Kia spokesman James Bell said the company "is attempting to have a remedy by the scheduled owner notification date of July 27".

Both automakers say they're working on a fix. Hyundai has said it will notify owners through mid-June.

In the affected vehicles, the air bag control unit may short circuit and prevent the front air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash, according to the NHTSA recall notice.

NHTSA said the air bag control module under investigation was built by ZF Friedrichshafen AG [ZFF.UL], a German auto supplier.

ZF said on Friday that each air bag control unit "is created to a customer's particular vehicle and platform-specific specifications". He also said that the automaker will provide customers with a rental vehicle in case its remedy for the issue still isn't ready by that date. One Forte crash happened in Canada.

Four people died in those crashes, NHTSA says, and six others were injured. The company provided technical support to Kia, it said.

Hyundai in February issued a recall for 154,000 U.S. Sonatas after non-deployment reports were linked to electrical overstress in the air bag control unit. Kia says there are no injuries or fatalities associated with this issue. The investigation into three recalls by the two brands is pending.
