Despite the increase, MA still has one of the nation's lowest per capita suicide rates, ranking 48th.

The CDC report found that suicide rates among women have risen at an even higher rate than the overall suicide rate, with significant increases in the suicide rate among women in 43 states.

Following the tragic loss of fashion designer Kate Spade, the Centers for Disease Control has released new information regarding suicides in Kansas.

In Spade's case, her husband says the two had been living apart for the last 10 months. The CDC suggests people learn the warning signs and how to respond, "reduce access to lethal means", including medication and firearms, and keep handy the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, manned around the clock to talk to those who are considering suicide or know someone who is.

More than half of those who died by suicide had not been diagnosed with a mental health condition, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC. "We don't think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage". Overall, almost 45,000 people died by suicide in 2016, which is more than twice the number of deaths from homicide, the CDC said.

The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the USA, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999.

In addition to the skyrocketing number of suicides in middle-aged adults, deaths by suicide are also on the rise in teens, with suicide now the second leading cause of death for all United States teens and young adults from ages 10 to 35.

The new report also found that, among US states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana.

The study also comes a day after Netflix announced plans for a third season of its hit series "13 Reasons Why", which focuses on a high schooler's suicide. "Men and Hispanics especially are less likely to seek help". The state has tried to tackle the problem with a website, https://massmen.org, that targets men in this age group.

Thomas Delaney, a faculty member at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine who studies suicide, said Thursday that several aspects of Vermont life have been linked to higher rates of suicide.

She and her colleagues collected data on suicides from every state.

Though more than half of people who died of suicide had no diagnosis, only 16 percent of those were women.

Firearms were revealed to be the most common method of suicide by those with and without a known mental illness.

Dr Ali stresses that the primary goal should be to "empower" people to recognize the signs of suicide risk in themselves and others in order to put a stop to the rising rates of suicide in the US.

Increasingly, suicide is being viewed not only as a mental health problem but a public health one.

The rise in substance use has been a factor, Tilley said. But public health officials have been training gun shop owners on what to do when a customer might be suicidal.

The biggest spike in suicides since 1999 was in North Dakota, where suicides rose 57 percent.
