Intel To Power Up Its First Discrete GPU Confirmed For 2020 Launch

Intel Gaming Intel will be releasing its first discrete GPU in 2020

Video: Intel promises PC owners smartphone-like battery life. That is, if we forget the Intel i740 which was one of the first AGP graphics cards back in the 90s against the sea of PCI-based graphics cards from ATI and NVIDIA.

The last time we heard about Intel's dedicated GPU is that it would be unveiled at CES 2019, but according to new information from Intel itself, their dedicated GPU won't be arriving until 2020.

Taking to Twitter, Intel confirmed: "Intel's first GPU coming in 2020", with a link detailing the appointment of Raja Koduri as the chief architect and general manager of the company's newly formed Core and Visual Computing Group, which - surprise, surprise - will focus on graphics. We still don't know how broad a range of products the company intends to introduce when it does re-enter the market, but Intel has at least put AMD and Nvidia on notice for when they can expect fresh competition in the graphics space.

Koduri now serves as Intel's chief architect and SVP of the newly created Core and Visual Computing Group.

Hardware analyst Ryan Shrout said in a post on MarketWatch that Intel CEO Brian Krzanich told analysts of the 2020 timeframe last week. Intel may still just about hold sway in the CPU market, but they're now a long way behind in the graphics game.

At the same time, Intel is big in the data centre space, so there's a good chance it may just concentrate on GPUs created to put its parallel processing grunt to use in running machine learning and data processing workloads rather than attempting to run Crysis.

The company has been tapping AMD Radeon GPU designs for its latest processors, so I wonder where the AMD relationship ends with Radeon and Intel when it starts launching its own discrete GPUs. "Intel needs to provide a performance and efficiency level that is in the same ballpark as Nvidia and AMD; within 20 percent or so", the analyst noted. In 1998 it unveiled the Intel740, or i740, in a high-profile launch. We often hear Nvidia and AMD talk about similar use cases for GPUs.
