Harley-Davidson, blaming retaliatory tariffs, to shift some production overseas

When the President of the United States Donald Trump threatened to escalate a trade war with Europe by imposing a 20 percent tariff on all USA imports of European Union-assembled vehicles via Twitter, European Auto Stocks Index immediately reacted, cratering.

"Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to US -based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally", the company's filing said.

Harley-Davidson said on Monday it would move production of motorcycles shipped to the European Union from the United States to its global facilities and forecast the trading bloc's tariffs would cost the company $90 million to $100 million a year. Their employees and customers are already very angry at them. If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit! "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into US without paying a big tax!".

The European tariffs have jumped from 6 percent to 31 percent, the company said.

Harley-Davidson says the decision to close a Kansas City, Missouri plant was made long before the tariffs were announced and has no ties to Thailand. Authored by the European Commission, a report stated that Trump tariffs would boomerang across the pond, and lead to the loss of 180,000 U.S.jobs.

The president accused Harley of using tariffs and the trade war as an excuse.

Harley-Davidson had long planned to open a new plant in Thailand, a decision that pre-dated the escalating trade war between Trump and leaders of a number of other countries. "Europe is a critical market for Harley-Davidson". "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into US without paying a big tax!"

The EU recently imposed retaliatory tariffs on $3.2 billion worth of U.S. goods, including motorcycles, bourbon, motorboats and cigarettes.

The move was a retaliation over duties Mr Trump imposed on steel and aluminium from Europe.

In February 2017, Trump welcomed Harley-Davidson executives to Washington and viewed a number of the company's motorcycles on the White House South Lawn.

Last year, as Breitbart News reported, about 183 American workers were laid off by the motorcycle company in Kansas City and Menomonee Falls.

Gov. Walker says he discussed tariffs with the president during a White House visit last week, and the president seemed to support the idea of no tariffs. "And I think the people who ride Harleys aren't happy with Harley-Davidson and I wouldn't be either".

"This is further proof of the harm from unilateral tariffs", a spokesperson for Ryan said in a statement.

The intensity of these attacks, which he typically only uses when referring to political opponents, came in a series of Twitter posts.

Harley-Davidson said Monday that it "maintains a strong commitment to US -based manufacturing" and that while the increase in overseas manufacturing "is not the company's preference", it "represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the European Union and maintain a viable business in Europe".

The EU is imposing tariffs on $3.2 billion worth of American goods, including motorcycles, orange juice, bourbon, peanut butter, motorboats, cigarettes and denim.
