Public health officials are often unable to investigate STIs because cases may not be able to give a name or address of exposed partners, and the number of partners people may have has increased.

More than 400,000 new diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections were made in England previous year, with cases of syphilis and gonorrhoea on the rise according to official figures. Of these, roughly half the diagnoses (21,346) involved men who have sex with men, up from 17,626 in 2016.

In March, the first super-gonorrhoea case was detected in the United Kingdom, where a man is said to have contracted the infection after having intercourse in South East Asia.

Those aged between 25 and 34-years-old accounted for most cases - a total of 33%.

Overall, there were 422,000 diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) made in England, including 7,137 diagnoses of syphilis and 44,676 diagnoses of gonorrhea.

The Public Health England figures showed a large proportion of diagnoses - 78% - involved men who have sex with men.

According to the new report, cases of gonorrhea also increased by 22% to 46,676 in England.

There has been a rise of 3 percent in SHS attendance between 2016 and 2017 (3.2 million in 2016 and 3.3 million in 2017).

Over the past five years, attendances have jumped 13 percent.

"There is no time for complacency", said Councillor Izzi Seccombe.

The report also shows that there's been an eight percent decline in chlamydia testing and a two percent drop in chlamydia diagnoses in 15-24-year-olds.

"Our sexual health services are stretched too thinly and demand outweighs availability, with more cuts already planned".

There were 20% more cases in England in the past year, and 148% more than in 2008.

It recommended that local authorities need to enable young women to be tested for chlamydia when they access contraceptive services, and stressed the importance of "statutory, high-quality" relationship and sex education in secondary schools.

Dr Gwenda Hughes, consultant scientist and head of the STI section at Public Health England, said: 'Sexually transmitted infections pose serious consequences to health - both your own and that of your current and future sexual partners.

She said that there should be consistent and correct use of condoms with new and casual sexual partners as well as regular check-ups and testing to determine and treat these infections early. The impact of STIs can be considerable, with some causing infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and harm to unborn babies.
