During a trip to Cairo over the weekend, prime minister Abiy Ahmed said the countries made progress on sharing the Nile's waters and would put together an agreement to set up a mutual fund for infrastructure development.

His remarks came in a joint press conference in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi following their talks on the giant dam that is now being built on the Nile River.

Abiy is accompanied to Egypt by high level delegation and is expected to hold discussion with Egyptian president Sisi on matters of bilateral relations, trade and regional issues, according to Ethiopian government sources. "We believe that we should benefit from this river, the Nile, but when we benefit we should not do harm to the Egyptian people", he said.

Egypt has lately been concerned about the effect that an Ethiopian dam being built on the Nile river would have on water flowing to its fields downstream.

The leaders of Ethiopia and Egypt vowed on Sunday to iron out their differences over a dam Addis Ababa is building on the Nile River that Cairo fears threatens its water supplies.

Fitsum Arega, chief of staff to the Ethiopian prime minister, tweeted that the freed prisoners will arrive in Addis Ababa later on Monday.

On May 16, the irrigation ministers of all three countries that share the Nile agreed to establish a scientific study group on how the dam would be filled and agreed to hold meetings every six months on the matter. Ethiopia says the dam is essential for its economic development.

The dam is being built near the Ethiopia-Sudan border and is already 63 percent complete.

Egypt's share of Nile water sits at 55.5 billion cubic meters, while Sudan's quota is 18.5 billion cubic meters.
