Though the powder can be added to your smoothies, dips, soups, and bread, CSIRO chose to try it out on coffee by introducing the "broccolatte" to one of the cafes in Melbourne.

Incorporating more vegetables into the diet can be hard, especially for children, but a new powdered broccoli that can be stirred into other foods and drinks may be the answer.

But apparently, those fun Australians, specifically the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Hort Innovation, have made a decision to ground up broccoli into a fine powder and put it in their morning joe.

“The broccoli powder has already been used for the production of extruded snacks with high vegetable content. Prototype extruded snacks with 20-100 per cent vegetable content were displayed during Science Week at the Victorian Market previous year and were well-received by parents and even by kids.”.

'Two tablespoons of broccoli powder is equivalent to one serve of vegetables, ' says CSIRO food scientist Maryann Augustin.

Smoothies, baked goods and soups are a few options to consider if wanting to mix the super food with your daily meals.

"With a rising trend in healthy eating across the board, Australian growers are always looking at ways to diversify their products and cut waste while meeting consumer demand", Mr Lloyd said.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA -If you want a quick way to get your veggies, you could have a V8 or you could have a broccoli latte.

Hort originally took the idea for the powder to CSIRO as a way to help people to increase their vegetable intake and find a use for broccoli that would otherwise end up in landfill because food retailers had declined to buy it for aesthetic reasons.

"The broccoli powder has already been used for the production of extruded snacks with high vegetable content".

The next steps are to further develop the product and test it with consumers with the hope of making it commercially available in the future.

"Eat your vegetables!" may not have been a prevalent command - nor an obeyed one - among Australian parents.

“The CSIRO team and Hort Innovation are discussing possible commercial applications with potential growers and others in the value chain who are interested in getting the powder on the market, ” she said. "They will also be contributing to healthier lifestyles!"
