Bert van Marwijk feeling Australian ahead of facing 'emotional' Peru

A stunning Andre Carrillo volley gave Peru their first World Cup goal in 36 years before captain Paolo Guerrero grabbed a second as the Andean nation condemned Australia to a 2-0 defeat in Sochi on Tuesday and an early exit from Russian Federation.

As the minutes ticked away so too did Australia's hopes of a turnaround; Aziz Behich got in behind the Peru defence and had time and space to pick his spot but instead opted to send a cross beyond the unmarked Cahill.

In order for Australia to qualify they must beat Peru, hope Denmark lose and also better the Danes' goal difference or goals scored.

Again, Australia threatened as in the 34th minute, a fantastic run from Tom Rogic found him one on one with Gallese, but the defensive unit managed to clear it out for a corner. Australia was pushing and Peru was allowing it. Tomi Juric leads the line instead of the injured Andrew Nabbout.

Bert van Marwijk's side would have felt it was deja vu, as Australia surged forward in numbers but lacked the polish to conjure a score, captain Mile Jedinak blazing over the bar in the fifth minute. Anderson Santamaria and Renato Tapia come in for Alberto Rodriguez and Pedro Aquino.

Peru were already out before this game but they still had a huge travelling support, clad in the country´s distinctive white and red colours.

Peru will be facing a side from Oceania for the first time in a World Cup finals, however they faced New Zealand in a qualification play-off to get to this stage - winning 2-0 over two legs.

In the 80th minute, Peru almost made the third goal as the team found itself in the box, but the ball hit the post and the score stayed at 2-0. The Aussies, who still have a great chance of qualification, have to go for it so I think this will leave plenty of space for Peru's attacking players.

Having steered Australia through the hard work of qualifying, Postecoglou quit in November, leaving a team questioning its identity before their fourth straight World Cup. Both players have enjoyed cameos from the substitute bench, with Arzani, in particular, excelling during his minutes on the pitch.

Whilst if the game is tight heading into the last fifteen, van Marwijk may turn to veteran striker Tim Cahill for some inspiration.

Despite their early elimination, Peru has played some impressive attacking football and showed moments of class in their games.

For the Socceroos it is a third consecutive World Cup in which they have failed to make it beyond the group stage.

It promises to be a fascinating encounter as Australia are looking for a victory against a Panama.
