Anti-G7 protesters, unions and environmentalists to crowd into Old Quebec

Trump vows to deal with 'unfair trade' ahead of tense G7 summit Trump goes on the offensive as G7 meeting opens in Quebec

The Trudeau government has threatened to impose up to 12.8 billion U.S.dollars in tariffs against American steel, aluminum and other products - ranging from coffee and candy to toilet paper and tablecloths - to take effect on July 1, unless the Trump administration withdrew its 25-percent tariff on Canadian steel imports and a 10-percent tariff on imports of Canadian aluminum.

Trump, who aides said has scant interest in multilateralism, resumed his tirade against G7 members and their "unfair trade practices" early on Friday.

Nicole Filion, with Quebec's league for civil liberties, said she worries about the possibility of mass arrests, the conditions of detainees inside the temporary jails, and the potential misuse of crowd-control weapons by police, such as rubber-ball blast grenades.

"The objective of the G's - whether the G7 or the G20 - is to essentially give the pertinent ministers and the leaders the opportunity to deal with issues of this kind and hopefully prevent issues of this kind", explained Martin, who served as Canada's prime minister from 2003 to 2006, and as the country's finance minister from 1993 to 2002. Trump tweeted ahead of his planned departure from Washington to Quebec.

Trump showed no sign of backing down on Friday, after earlier accusing both France and Canada of imposing massive tariffs on U.S. goods and then accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of "being so indignant".

"We are going to do very well". Under such an arrangement, he said, the US would agree to remove all tariffs and barriers if the other countries did as well.

Hundreds of protesters filled the heavily policed streets of Quebec, Canada, as world leaders gathered for the highly anticipated G7 summit.

Trump also said that Russian Federation should be allowed again to attend G7 summits.

"In a country like Canada, I find it extremely important that people are able to express their agreement or disagreement with politics, individuals, their concerns", Trudeau said.

Officials concede the mood is likely to be exceptionally tense.

Although Trump says the tariffs are necessary to protect United States industry, Canada and the European Union have denounced them as illegal and are preparing retaliatory measures.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Trump in a rare rebuke on Thursday that the other six members of the G7 might form their own group, adding that no leader "is forever".

Speaking to reporters before leaving for his meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump tried to downplay any notion that the meeting in Canada was contentious.

While the G7 leaders have largely praised Trump for his efforts to stabilise the Korean peninsula, they are unhappy he pulled out of an agreement created to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions.
