Algeria turns off internet nationwide for high school exams

Algeria has turned off its internet nationwide during high school exams in a bid to tackle cheating Algeria has turned off its internet nationwide during high school exams in a bid to tackle cheating

Algeria isn't the only country to turn off the digital taps in an effort to curb cheating.

There will be no service for an hour after the start of the exams for paper across the country.

Some might think that this is a somewhat extreme measure, but it should be noted that back in 2016 exam questions were leaked online, which means that there is some precedence to go to such measures to prevent cheats. Social media website, Facebook, is also to be blocked nationwide for the entire time period of the exam, according to Education Minister Nouria Benghabrit. The government, besides planning internet blackouts which are likely to continue till Monday, has initiated a series of steps to prevent almost 70,000 diploma students from cheating during the exams.

At the same time two thousand centres of the examinations were installed metal detectors to prevent students bringing mobile devices - phones and tablets.

Ms Benghabrit also said of the drastic move "We should not passively give up our fight against any possible leak". SMEX is an organisation advocating for a free and open internet in the Arab world.

Algeria's baccalaureate was hugely compromised in 2016 by a wide-ranging operation in which questions were leaked both before and during the exams. While it will certainly make it more hard, kids are creative, and have gone to elaborate and impressive measures to cheat the system.

Students and cheating in exams is a "tradition" that will never truly be eliminated. That strategy seems laughable now.
