Alberto, classified as a subtropical storm due to its hybrid appearance between a tropical storm - with a warm core - and a low-pressure system - with a colder, upper-level low pressure present - will move slowly toward the northern Gulf Coast on Memorial Day before eventually making landfall.

Alberto is the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - a season that doesn't formally begin until June 1, the National Hurricane Center says. But this is nature.

After Alberto reached 3.25 days as a named storm, Colorado State University meteorologist Philip Klotzbach said that it is "the longest-lived Atlantic named storm forming in May since Alice in 1953".

Alberto had 45 miles per hour winds when it came ashore on Laguna Beach in the Florida Panhandle on Monday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of 7 AM Monday, Alberto had wind speeds of 65 miles per hour and was moving northwest at 7 miles per hour.

While Alberto nears the shore, the warning area has been scaled back from the Suwannee River back west to the Florida-Alabama state line.

A storm surge watch remains in effect for much of northern Florida, from the Suwannee to Navarre in the Panhandle.

Alberto is forecast to make landfall this afternoon near Panama City Beach, Florida.

"There is still uncertainty of where landfall will occur, which will likely be late Monday or early Tuesday morning", Director of Alabama Emergency Management Agency Brian E. Hastings said, but he urged residents and tourists to stay informed on the latest regional forecast.

Duffey said the storm is expected to remain relatively mild.

Some of the rain will by heavy.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who issued a state of emergency on Saturday in all of the state's 67 counties, said on Sunday that the Florida National Guard has 5,500 guard members ready to be deployed if needed.

Heavy rains were expected across Florida and in parts of Alabama and Georgia.

Alberto isn't taking a bead on the Carolinas, but the storm has stirred up enough moisture to make for rainy and soggy conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong storms possible Thursday and Friday: As Alberto moves away, a different type of summertime weather pattern kicks in; that could deliver some intense summertime storms on Thursday and Friday.

Flash flood watches have been posted for much of Florida, and along the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and southwest Georgia.

The early storm doesn't necessarily mean it will be a busier-than-usual hurricane season though. The chance for rain then declines significantly throughout the night.

Winds from the storm are forecast to hit Florida's Panhandle on Sunday night.
